Problem
Reading long PDFs, ebooks, and documents on a phone is slow — and most TTS apps demand accounts, subscriptions, or upload your documents to a server.
Why I built it
Turn any document into audio that never leaves the device — open a file or paste text and listen, with word-by-word highlighting and a personal offline library.
How it works
- Opens PDF, EPUB, DOCX, TXT, HTML, and RTF directly or via share from any app.
- Reads aloud with system TTS voices in 50+ languages, 0.5x–2x speed, pitch control.
- Background playback with sleep timer; bookmarks and auto-saved reading position.
Technology stack
- Native Android
- System TTS engines — fully offline
- On-device library, no backend
Challenges
- Reliable background playback across OEM battery savers
- Voice loading consistency across devices
- Keeping startup fast with large documents
What I learned
- Privacy is a selling point users actively seek out.
- Accessibility users are the most loyal audience.
